People who want to become certified nursing assistants (CNAs) have many options as to where they want to study. They are not limited to their local college or hospital to fulfill their education and training. It is possible to become a CNA online through many colleges. However, there are many advantages and disadvantages to studying online. It may not be for everybody, but those that do opt for online classes will find it time-saving and affordable.
Below we take a look at some of the points that may affect your decision to take CNA classes online, there are clearly other points to be taken into account, but these will at a minimum give you some idea of the advantages and disadvantages you may want to consider.
Advantages of CNA Classes Online
- Study at your own pace – A student is given the option to study whenever they have time. This option is great for people who already have jobs or cannot leave the home for long hours. When studying online, they will read their materials and contribute to class anytime of the day. As long as the student follows the given syllabus and completes their work in the time set, they will succeed. They can work at three o’clock in the morning or at three o’clock in the afternoon, whenever their time allows them to. The classes are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All a person needs is a computer and a stable internet connection.
- Finish quicker – This depends on the student, but if they are able to, they may finish a four year degree in less time. Classes are shorter and are back to back. If a student commits themselves, they will finish their CNA degree in less time than that of a traditional student. They can then apply to jobs sooner and begin their career sooner. They can study from the comfort of their home, on a lunch break at work or from anywhere in the world.
- Pay less – Most online colleges are more affordable than traditional day colleges. There are no parking fees, student fees, health fees or other college fees. Their tuition is cheaper and this will save them more money in the long run. If the student has to pay their education through school loans, they will not have as much debt as a CNA who went to a local college or studied through a hospital program.
Disadvatages of CNA Training Online
- Lack of clinical experience - With regards to CNAs, they require clinical work. There is no way to perform clinical work online, so the student lacks this experience. They will not be able to physically take vital signs or help patients out with personal needs. This may prevent a person from getting a job. However, some online classes require clinical work at a local facility along with the online education they are receiving to complete their CNA program.
- Help is limited - While there is a question and answer forum, email and discussion boards, students will not get an immediate response to their question. The online program is asynchronous, meaning that not all the students and teacher are online at the same time. The student will eventually get an answer to their question, but when is up to the teacher and other students. The online experience is not for everyone because there is no physical contact with students.
- Problem with exam - Since an online student has their textbook and material in front of them, they are not fully educated as a traditional student. Some online exams are open book. They may be timed, but the student will not memorize the material as well as a student who has to take an exam without a book. This means that the online CNA student may not perform as well on their certification test. They will also lack clinical experience, and this can damage their chances of passing the certification test.
While CNA training online might not be for everyone, those looking to become certified nursing assistants can pursue their career online. Their job requires care and experience.
They can research online colleges to check for their accreditation and how their city and state will accept their degree. With many online degrees, comes pros and cons, and this program is no different. Clinical experience is important, and this aspect of the program cannot be completed online. Prospective students should find a way to gain that experience to increase their chances of finding a job when they become certified to work.
